GOVENOR SCHWARZENEGGER TO APPOINT REPLACEMENT FOR RETIRING SONOMA COUNTY FAMILY LAW JUDGE

What characteristics should a good family law judge have?

That is a question that Govenor Schwarzenegger has before him now. It is especially important that a newly appointed court judge has significant experience in the area of family law. The retirement of Judge Rosenfield on the Sonoma Family Court has left a vacancy recently from a man who has served on the bench since 1985.

Replacing Judge Arnold J Rosenfield who has been sitting on the bench in Sonoma County for many years will be no small task. He has served as a Superior Court Judge in Sonoma County as well as teaching as an adjunct professor at Sonoma State University and also lives locally in Santa Rosa.

The turnover on the bench will bring additional new faces by appointment for both Judges Knoel Owen and Arnold Rosenfield. Voters in June will also be deciding two contested races for Sonoma County Superior Court judges.

While recently Schwarzenegger appointed a Santa Rosa woman, Shelly J. Averill, to the bench, currently six candidates vie for the other open judicial seats.

This brings about quite a few new faces to the family law court system here in Sonoma County. With the introduction brought about to the family law through the Elkins Family Law Task Force, it should be a year to bring about many changes.

A local family attorney who has been appearing in front of these presiding judges since 1995 in Sonoma County says of Sherry Averill “I have known Ms. Averill to be an attorney with all of the qualifications that I would want in a judge before whom I am going to present a case”. Attorney Bret Campoy with his broad legal experience in the family law category and based locally in Santa Rosa will be watching as Govenor Schwarzenegger makes his decision.

Four judges, whose terms are not expiring this election cycle, have left or are leaving at the end of this year. They are Judges Arnold D. Rosenfield and Knoel Owen and Commissioners Stephany Joy and Cynthia Deneholz. The Superior Court of Sonoma County California will be bringing on change in 2010.

When he retires from the bench this summer, Rosenfield will leave on a consistent note. The CASA Program, initiated in 1996 by Superior Court Judge Arnold Rosenfield has helped many children in the family law court system.

Since its inception, the CASA Program has committed to serving abused/neglected children of Sonoma County who come before the Juvenile Court for protection.

What new changes will these new faces bring to family law in Sonoma County? That waits to be answered by both Govenor Schwarzenegger and voters in June.
